Independence – Elizabeth J. Brown, 101 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Thursday, September 6, 2018, at Lexington Estate in Independence.  She was born on October 15, 1916, in Audubon County, Iowa, the daughter of Willis Miles and Carrie Hunter Gardner.  She graduated from high school in Audubon, Iowa, with the Class of 1932, and then, went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.  She married Franklin “Burt” Brown in Hazleton, Iowa.  He preceded her in death in 1988.  Mrs. Brown farmed with her husband until they retired in 1981.  Mrs. Brown was a member of the Methodist Church in Hazleton, the Buchanan County Garden Club, and the Order of Eastern Star.

Mrs. Brown is survived by 1 sister, Marilyn Stephenson of Alexandria, Virginia, many nieces and nephews, and a close friend, Cheryl Penne of Independence.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 1 brother, and 2 sisters.

Memorial Services will be held at a later date.  White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements.
