Independence – Verna I. Nielsen, 90 years old, of Marengo, Iowa, formerly of Independence, Iowa, died on Thursday, February 22, 2018, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was born on November 5, 1927, in Buchanan County, Iowa, the daughter of Lynn L. and Bertha A. (Hand) Fulton. She graduated from high school in Quasqueton, Iowa, with the Class of 1945. She and Dale William Nielsen were married on November 21, 1945, at the Union Church Parsonage in Quasqueton. He preceded her in death in 1997. Mrs. Nielsen farmed with her husband until retiring. She moved to Independence in 1997. In 2015 she moved to Marengo to be closer to her family. Mrs. Nielsen was an active member of the 1st United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Buchanan County Health Center Auxiliary. In addition to her volunteer work, she enjoyed following the Iowa Hawkeyes and reading.
Mrs. Nielsen is survived by 2 sons, Larry (Elizabeth) Nielsen of Neosha, Missouri, and William (Pat) Nielsen of Marengo, Iowa, 2 daughters, Pamela (Carroll) Doak of Grundy Center, Iowa, and Beverly Gray of Seymour, Missouri, 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and her twin sister, Verda Loeb of LaPorte City, Iowa.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters, Maurine Nelson and Maxine Walton, and 1 granddaughter, Constance Nielsen.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church in Independence with Rev. Scott Meador officiating. Burial will be in Quasqueton Cemetery in Quasqueton, Iowa. Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
