Mary Margaret Vogel was born March 5, 1927, in Black Hawk County, IA, the daughter of Joseph Delagardelle and Margaret (Schmitz) Delagardelle; she was the 3rd child of six.  She graduated from Sacred Heart School in Waterloo with the Class of 1944.  Her parents owned and operated the Gilbertville Milling Company in Gilbertville and throughout her teen years she worked for her father in the office at the mill.  On January 14, 1947, she married Robert James Vogel at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville, and together they had five children.  Robert and Mary also owned and operated Vogel’s Jack and Jill in Gilbertville, and the kids all worked in the store as they grew.  For several years Robert and Mary had a cabin on Holiday Lake and as a family they enjoyed boating and waterskiing and relaxing on the weekends.  These were probably some of the most memorable times relaxing and having fun as a family.  Robert and Mary’s daughter, Lynne was born with spinal-bifida and she loved rides in the boat until her passing on May 9, 1970.  Lynne was the 1968 Easter Seal Sweetheart for Iowa.

Mary liked bowling, golf and clowning around in Texas, She actually belonged to a group that would dress as clowns and entertain and even go to hospitals.  She liked to make balloon animals and give them to children at the parish festivals.

Robert and Mary were able to do some traveling and won a couple of trips through the grocery store.  They had a wonderful trip to Spain and in 1983 took their son Jay to Florida and went to Disney World.  In later years Robert and Mary enjoyed their winters in Texas and as those years went by they spent six months there and six months in Gilbertville.  This way they could golf year all year long.  While in Texas Mary accomplished what some golfers only dream of, on February 16, 1987, she hit a “hole in one”.  Robert died December 5, 2005, and Mary continued to go to Texas for only a few more years.  Mary lived her whole life in Gilbertville and her son Jay lived with her until she moved to NorthCrest in Waterloo.  She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Mary is survived by two daughters; Barbara (Mark) Moore of Ames, IA, Kathleen (Jack) Reuter of Jesup, IA; two sons; William (Sandy) Vogel of Hudson, IA, Jay Vogel of Gilbertville, IA; 9 grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren; also one sister, Doris Westemeier of Cedar Falls, IA.

In addition to her husband Robert and daughter Lynne, she is also preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Bernice Schmitz; and three brothers, Gerald, Lloyd and Roy Delagardelle.
