She was born on June 15, 1940, in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Robert Warren and Una Frances (Efner) Fleming. She graduated from high school in Pasadena, California, and then later earned a B.A. from Upper Iowa University in Fayette. In 1970, she married Charlie Tamayo in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic. They later divorced. Ms. Fleming was a legal secretary at the U.S. Embassy in Santa Domingo and later, in Geneva, Switzerland. She was the owner of Merle Norman Cosmetics in Oelwein for many years. And from 1985 until 1993, she worked for the Department of Human Services in Waterloo. At the time of her retirement in 2015, she was an independent insurance agent. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Independence. Ms. Fleming is survived by one daughter, Alexis (Paul) Buhr of Oelwein, Iowa, and 4 grandchildren, JaRon, Zach, Ian, and Ariana. She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 brother, Robert Fleming, and 1 sister, Frances Barnidge. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2017, at the First Baptist Church in Independence with Rev. Mike Nemmers officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein, Iowa. Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 15th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence. |
