Waterloo – Archie D. Thomas, Sr., 89 years old, of Waterloo, Iowa, formerly of Independence, Iowa, died on Saturday, November 18, 2017, at the Marshalltown Hospital in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was born on July 17, 1928, in Swain, Arkansas, the son of Luther and Lula (Mays) Thomas. He attended school in Arkansas and Missouri. Mr. Thomas served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On January 30, 1954, he and the former Joan Marlene Fowlkes were married in St. Louis, Missouri. When he retired in 1990, he was a meat cutter at Farmstead Foods in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mr. Thomas was a member of the Bechter-Boies V.F.W. Post #2440 inIndependence. He also volunteered at the Buchanan County Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, and spending time with his family. He also was the grounds keeper at Fontana Park near Hazleton, Iowa, for several years.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan, 2 sons, Archie D. Thomas, Jr., and Howard (Diane) Thomas, both of Independence, Iowa, 1 daughter, Karrie Holt ofWaterloo, Iowa, 12 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 daughters, Sharry Thomas and Terry Mochal, 2 grandchildren, and 15 brothers and sisters.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at the White Funeral Home in Independence. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery inIndependence. Friends may call for visitation from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21st, at the funeral home where a Military Service begins at 6:30 p.m.
