In 1977, he and Chris were married in Washington State. He was a paint salesman and eventually owned a paint store in Dubuque, Iowa, prior to moving toIndependence. In Independence he was a painter at the Mental Health Institute for 13 years. He was also the custodian at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence for 38 years. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs play baseball and reading, but most of all, he was a social person who enjoyed his family and friends and being out of doors. Mr. Hemmer is survived by his wife of 40 years, Chris, 8 children, Heather (Justin) Demsky of Eugene, Oregon, Heath (Kelly) Hemmer of Marion, Iowa, Tyler (Michaela Beatty) Hemmer of Waterloo, Iowa, Tony (Joyce) Hemmer and Sandy Hemmer, both of Dubuque, Iowa, Rebecca Hemmer and Theresa (Andrew) Hemmer, both of New Hampshire, and Mark (Amy) Hemmer of Maquoketa, Iowa. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, and 1 sister-in-law, Helen Hemmer of Independence. He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother, Don Hemmer. Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence.
