Independence– Harry E. Van Horn, 84 years old, of Whitehall, Wisconsin, formerly of Independence, Iowa, died on Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Tri-County Hospital in Whitehall. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on December 23, 1932, the son of Harry Eldon and Julia Blanche (Fosse) Van Horn. He graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1951 and then, completed the course of study at Brown Electronics in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the U.S. Air Force. On December 30, 1953, he and the former Evelyn Joyce Black were married in Waterloo, Iowa. They later divorced. In 1980 he and the former Margie Hanson Anderson were married. She preceded him in death in 2013. Mr. Van Horn was the owner and operator of the House of Sight and Sound in Independence where he sold and repaired televisions and other electronics. In his free time he enjoyed fishing, camping, and boating. He also enjoyed golf. And he was always ready to take time to enjoy Hershey’s Chocolate.
Mr. Van Horn is survived by 2 sons, Robert (Laura) Van Horn of West Union, Iowa, and Randy (Judy) Van Horn of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 3 daughters, Brenda Kammer of Milford, Iowa, Peg Van Horn of Caledonia, Minnesota, and Pam Wenzel of Dubuque, Iowa, 16 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Norma Gates and Pat Gates, both of Independence, 1 daughter-in-law, Barbara Van Horn of Independence, and 1 sister-in-law, Patricia Van Horn of Las Vegas, Nevada.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, 1 son, Burton Van Horn, 1 brother, Richard Van Horn, 1 sister, Carol Stahle, and 2 sons-in-law, Jules Wenzel and Tom Kammer.
Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, August 7, 2017, at the White Funeral Home in Independence. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8th, at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.
