Independence – Caryel “Jake” Crawford, 95 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at Lexington Estate in Independence.  He was born on his family’s farm in Sumner Township of Buchanan County, Iowa, on January 27, 1922, the son of Wade Elmer and Louise Emma (Holle) Crawford.  He attended the Buchanan County country schools.  On November 25, 1951, he and the former Anna Mae Mumford were married in Independence.  Mr. Crawford farmed all of his life.  He officially retired in 1985, but was always around to help or offer advice.  His specialty was raising cattle.  He was a member of ImmanuelLutheran Church in Independence, the Farm Bureau, Mended Hearts Chapter #145 in Waterloo, and he was a charter member of the Buchanan County Co-op.

Mr. Crawford is survived by his wife of 65 years, Anna Mae, 2 daughters, Carol (Al) Koohy of Yakama, Washington, and Brenda Johnson of Independence, Iowa, and 6 sons, Steven (Denise) Crawford of Gilbert, Iowa, Dennis (Mary Ann) Crawford, Wade (Jean Ann) Crawford, and Randy (Tammy) Crawford, all of Independence, Iowa, Brent (Jennifer) Crawford of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Lee (Jane) Crawford of Owatonna, Minnesota.  He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, 1 sister, Donna Manson of Independence, Iowa, and 2 brothers, Robert Crawford of Winthrop and Donald Crawford of Independence, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, LaVonne Fisher, Norine Crawford, and Wylmarie Rasmussen, 1 brother, Earl Crawford, 1 son-in-law, Wayne Johnson, and 1 daughter-in-law, Marj Crawford.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence with Rev. Greg DeBoer officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.  Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21^st, at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
