Independence – Virgil E. Manson, 92 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at the BuchananCounty Health Center in Independence.  He was born on January 17, 1925, in Buchanan County, near Quasqueton, Iowa, the son of Roy Willis and Zoe Arlitta (Smith) Manson.  He attended the Buchanan County country schools.  On November 23, 1950, he and the former Donna Dorothy Crawford were married in Quasqueton.  For 30 years, Mr. Manson worked for the Buchanan County Secondary Road Department.  He retired in 1986.  He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence.  Mr. Manson was able to figure out and fix or fabricate almost anything.  He enjoyed trapping and carpentry.

Mr. Manson is survived by his wife of 66 years, Donna, 1 son, Virgil R. (Kay) Manson of Rowley, Iowa, 1 daughter, Shirley (Roger) Allen of Independence, Iowa, 4 grandchildren, Jeff Manson, Andy Allen, Tyler Allen, and Amanda Manson, 9 great grandchildren, and 1 sister, Dorothy (Bob) Zimmerly of Independence.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Glen Manson and LaVerne Manson, and 1 sister, Lois Jones.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, February 18, 2017, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence with Rev. Greg DeBoer officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.  Friends may call for visitation from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17^th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
