He was born on March 9, 1947, in State Center, Iowa, the son of Ronald Verne and Neva Mae (Littlejohn) Holland. He graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1965. He attended Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He served in the Air Force for 22 years before retiring in 1989. Jon was an organizer. He produced a city wide free Christmas dinner for several years. He was a founding member of the Independence Celebrations Committee which presents the Independence Fourth of July celebration and the Brew-B-Q event. He sang in choirs in Independence and Waterloo. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence and the Independence Rotary Club. And he has been a Councilman at Large on the Independence City Council since 2010. Mr. Holland is survived by 1 son, Donald Holland of Swansea, Illinois, 2 grandchildren, his mother, Neva Holland of Independence, Iowa, and 1 sister, Sharon (Bob) Harrison of Madison, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his father. Memorial Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 14th, at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence with Rev. John Hougen officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. |
