La Porte City – Norma L. Schares, 82 years old of rural La Porte City, IA, died Sunday, April 3, 2016, at the Cedar Valley Hospice House in Waterloo.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. – Thursday, April 7, 2016, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, IA with burial at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Gilbertville. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church. There will be a Parish Rosary at 4:00 p.m., and a Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home. Memorials will be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville and to the Cedar Valley Hospice.
Mrs. Schares was born October 2, 1933, in Black Hawk County, IA, the daughter of Albert Weber and Loretta (Kies) Weber. She married Melvin Anthony Schares, Sr., on February 6, 1951, in Gilbertville. He preceded her in death on October 15, 1985. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening and caring for the farmstead where she lived. Her family values have been evident in her care and love over the years for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mrs. Schares is survived by three sons, John (Karla) Schares of Jesup; Scott Schares of Independence, Roger (Julie) Schares of Jesup; four daughters, Deb (Gary) Jacobsen of Jesup, Lora Schares of Livingston, TX; Doris Schares of Marion, IA, Judy Schares of Waterloo; 15 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; daughter in law, Dot (Rod) Maudlin of Eddyville, IA; two sisters, Doris (Bernard) Brown of Dunkerton, LaVonne Friedley of Waterloo; one brother, LaVern (Janice) Weber of Gilbertville. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Cleo P. Schares, Melvin A. Schares, Jr.; one grandson, Nicholas Schares; three sisters, Magdalen Wirtz, Ella Even, Betty Dilley; and six brothers, Raphael, Arnold, Leo, Ronald, Stanley, and Cleo Weber.
