White Funeral Home Jesup – Donald Leo Wirtz, 72 years old of Jesup, IA, died Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2015, at ABCM Rehabilitation Centers of Independence – West Campus, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. – Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, with inurnment at St. Athanasius Catholic Cemetery, Jesup. Military Rites will be conducted by Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 of Jesup. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Monday, December 28th at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, with a Parish Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and Vigil Services at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Tuesday at the church. Memorials will be donated to charity. Don was born October 29, 1943, in Waterloo, IA, the son of Herbert Wirtz and Magdalen (Weber) Wirtz. Following graduation from Don Bosco High School, Gilbertville, IA, with the class of 1962, he served in the US Army. On September 18, 1965, he was united in marriage to Judith Ann Aukerman in Olympia, WA. They made their home in Jesup and Don worked in the foundry and later at the engine works for Deere & Co. in Waterloo until retirement on February 28, 2006. He was a member of the UAW Local 838 in Waterloo; St. Athanasius Catholic Church in Jesup; and a former member of Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 343 of Jesup. Don enjoyed his grandchildren, was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed Iowa Hawkeye sporting events. Don is survived by his wife, Judith of Jesup, IA; one son, Roger (LuAnn) Wirtz of Dike, IA; one daughter, Kelly (Randy) Flaucher, of Jesup, IA; four grandchildren, Ashley, Courtney, P.J. and Ally; two great grandchildren, Brenden and Jordan; one brother, David (Theresa) Wirtz of Atkins, IA; and 5 sisters, Gladys Wirtz of Kenosha, WI, Sr. Mary Lou Wirtz of Wheaton, IL, Darlene (Bill) Hansen of Fountain Hills, AZ, Dolores (Nick) Nie of Jesup, and Rose (Randy) Anderson of Waterloo. His parents and on brother, Lloyd Wirtz, preceded him in death. |
