Independence – Katherine “Kay” Gaffney, 85 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Thursday, October 1, 2015, at Lexington Estate in Independence.  She was born on April 15, 1930, in Oelwein, Iowa, the daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth (Burkhart) Kisner.  She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Oelwein with the Class of 1949.  On February 18, 1950, she and Richard Henry Gaffney were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein.  He preceded her in death in 2001.  Mrs. Gaffney was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence and the Catholic Daughters of America.

Mrs. Gaffney is survived by 2 sons, John (Judy) Gaffney of Independence and Dale (Rosemary) Gaffney of Brainerd, Minnesota, and 1 daughter, Penny (Andy) Donnelly of Independence.  She is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 1 brother, Larry (Vi) Gaffney of Parkersburg, Iowa, and 1 sister, Betty Egan of Oelwein.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 4 brothers, 5 sisters, and 1 daughter in infancy.

The Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2015, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence with Rev. Donald Plamondon officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.  Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, October 2^nd at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
