Independence – Mildred E. Hicks, 85 years old, of Independence, Iowa, formerly of Newton, Iowa, died on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence. She was born on May 7, 1930, in Mt. Moriah, Missouri, the daughter of Jess Adam and Echoe Lee (Addison) Middleton. She married Elgie A. Hicks in 1953, in Newton, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1989. On February 14, 2007, she and Leonard B. McClenathan were married at the Whittenberg Church near Newton, Iowa. Mrs. Hicks was a production worker at the Vernon Company in Newton for over 30 years. She retired in 1993. She was a member of the Vernon Retirees and the U.A.W. Local in Newton. She enjoyed needle work of all kinds and tending her garden and house plants. She loved flowers of all kinds.
Mrs. Hicks is survived by her husband, Leonard McClenathan of Independence, 1 son, Jess (Sherry) Hicks of Des Moines, Iowa, 3 grandchildren, Tom Hicks, Brian Hicks, and Amanda Hicks, and 3 great grandchildren.
In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 1 son, John E. Hicks, and 2 brothers.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at the White Funeral Home in Independence with Rev. Scott Meador officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.on Friday, July 24th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
