Independence – William Robert Salow, 90 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Thursday, June 11, 2015, at the Buchanan County Health Center – Long Term Care in Independence. He was born on February 1, 1925, in Earlville, Iowa, the son of Raymond Carl and Nellie Blanche (Hunt) Salow. He graduated from high school in Earlville with the Class of 1943 and then served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II. Mr. Salow was on eight different islands. He worked in Grave Registration, identifying the dead and performing burials. By the time he was 20, he was a Staff Sergeant. In 1946, he chose not to reenlist with a rank of Master Sergeant. After returning he graduated from Hawkeye Technical College in Waterloo, Iowa. On November 25, 1948, he and the former Audrey Elaine Bergstrom were married at the First Lutheran Church in Manchester, Iowa. They lived in Waterloo, Iowa, until 1991, when they moved to Independence. Audrey preceded him in death in 2014. Mr. Salow was a product engineer with John Deere in Waterloo. He retired in 1982. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence.
Mr. Salow is survived by 2 sons, William M. (Kim) Salow of Mitchellville, Iowa, and Randall (Rachel) Salow of Independence, Iowa, 1 daughter, Elaine (Richard) Workman of Kansas City, Missouri, 6 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 6 brothers, Donald (Irene) Salow and Richard (Pat) Salow, both of Manchester, Iowa, Loren Salow, Clarence “Hap” (Phyllis) Salow, and David (Rosie) Salow, all of Earlville, Iowa, and Gary Salow of Phoenix, Arizona.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, Marian Young, and 4 brothers, Walter Salow, Ray Salow, Jr., Harold Salow, and Clyde Salow.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2015, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence with Pastor Charis Combs-Lay officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence where a Military Service begins at 6:30 p.m.
