Independence – Harlan L. Peterson, 67 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Thursday, May 28, 2015, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.  He was born on February 5, 1948, in Buchanan County, Iowa, the son of Allen Willmer and Ramona (Franck) Peterson.  He graduated from high school in LaPorte City, Iowa, with the Class of 1966.  Later in life, he earned an Associates Degree in accounting from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and then, in the U.S. Army Reserve.  On September 12, 1969, he and the former Brenda Dianne McFarlane were married at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence.  Mr. Peterson was a line worker at Wilson Foods in Cedar Rapids.  Later he was a service station and convenience store manager.  He retired in 2006.  He was a member of the American Lutheran Church in LaPorte City and the Purple Heart Chapter in Waterloo.  Mr. Peterson was the No. 1 Fan at any sporting event where his grandchildren were playing.  He also watched sports on TV.  He enjoyed talking to people and playing 500 and Rummy

Mr. Peterson is survived by his wife of 45 years, Brenda, 2 daughters, Wendy Hersom of Independence, Iowa, and Stephanie (Steve) Leibold of Jesup, Iowa, 1 son, Mickey (Shyla) Peterson of LaPorte City, Iowa, and his parents, Ramona and Allen Peterson of LaPorte City.  He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Kale Hersom, Carley Hersom, Lily Hersom, Elleigh (Mitch) McGraw, Madison Scott, Mason Scott, Max Scott, Stella Leibold, Kerstin Peterson, Kylee Peterson, and Kennedy Peterson, 2 step grandchildren, Nikita Green and Justin English, and 1 great grandson, Harlan Miller.

He was preceded in death by a set of twin grandchildren in infancy.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at the American Lutheran Church in LaPorte City, Iowa, with Pastor Doug Rokke officiating.  Burial will be in the Quasqueton Cemetery in Quasqueton, Iowa.  Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, June 1st, at the White Funeral Home in Independence and for an hour before services at the church.
