White Funeral Home Dunkerton – Kathleen M. Hazel , 91 years old of Cedar Rapids and formerly of Dunkerton, IA, died Friday, August 8, 2014, St. Luke's Hospital hospice unit in Cedar Rapids. Kathleen was born Aug. 9, 1922, the daughter of Neil and Doris (Richmond) Magee, at home in rural Black Hawk County, IA. In 1939, at age 16, she graduated from Dunkerton High School as valedictorian and then earned a degree from Iowa State Teachers College. She married George Wilson Cox on Aug. 31, 1944, and after his death in 1962, she married Joe Hazel on July 1, 1968. He died Nov. 22, 1968. Kathleen and George raised six children: Carol, Dennis, Diane, Ronald, Barbara and Marilyn. A soft-spoken woman, Kathleen loved the Lord and devoted her life in service to others. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Kathleen taught third and fourth grade in Preston, Iowa, and at Dunkerton School for over 20 years, retiring in 1984. She also taught a literacy program at Hawkeye Tech. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Dunkerton and American Baptist Women. Kathleen loved to read and was librarian in Dunkerton for several years. She loved all sports, and especially enjoyed watching college football and basketball and her Iowa Hawkeyes! She watched Jeopardy on television and always knew the answers before anyone else. Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; son, Ronald; sister, Dorothy Gilbert; and brothers, Kenneth Magee and Marion Magee in infancy. Surviving are five children, Carole (Fred) Sprague of Marshalltown, Dennis (Lisa) Cox of Denver, Iowa, Diane (Edward) Foss of Cedar Rapids, Barbara (Darwin, deceased) Fuller of Waterloo and Marilyn Eberle of Muscatine; 17 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Kathleen will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at First Baptist Church in Dunkerton, with burial at Fairview Cemetery, Dunkerton. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at White Funeral Home in Jesup and for an hour before services Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family. |
