Independence – Ivan J. Sutton, 105 years old, died on Sunday, July 20, 2014, at his home in rural Independence. He was born on February 4, 1909, in Delhi, Iowa, the son of Alonzo John and Edna Ethel (Kelley) Sutton. He graduated from high school in Delhi, Iowa, with the Class of 1928. On December 12, 1934, he and the former Alta Alma Holmes were married in Delaware, Iowa. She preceded him in death in 1977. They farmed in Delaware and Clayton Counties in Iowa until moving to Independence in 1975. Mr. Sutton was an active member of the Grange for over 50 years. He liked to tinker with antique mechanical clocks. In later years he enjoyed canning tomatoes and exercising. He got his first driver’s license in 1934. It cost 25 cents. He quit driving in 2007.

Mr. Sutton is survived by 2 daughters, Edna Faust and Pauline (Delmar, Sr.) Walton, both of Independence, Iowa, and 2 sons, Robert Sutton, Sr., of Eldridge, Iowa, and Roger (Jo Ann) Sutton, Sr., of Morrison, Illinois. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 24 great great grandchildren, several step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, step great great grandchildren, and 1 step great great great grandson.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, 1 daughter, Melissa Carroll, 1 son, Dwayne Sutton, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and 2 great granddaughters.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 25, 2014, at the White Funeral Home in Independence, Iowa, with Rev. William F. Hill and Rev. James Ganze officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for Visitation from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 24th, at the funeral home.
