White Funeral Home Dunkerton – John F. Ortner, 89 years old of Dunkerton, IA, died Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center, La Porte City, IA. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. - Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at St. Francis Catholic Church - Barclay, rural Dunkerton, IA with Msgr. Lyle Wilgenbusch as Celebrant. Military Rites will be conducted by Peter Kress American Legion Post #636 of Dunkerton, IA. Burial will be at a later date in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, where there will be a Parish Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Wednesday at the church. Memorials will be directed to St. Francis Catholic Church - Barclay. Online condolences may be posted at www.White-MtHope.com John Francis Ortner was born December 24, 1924, in rural Dunkerton, IA, the son of Matthew Ortner and Margaret (Brown) Ortner. Following graduation from Dunkerton High School, he served in the US Army during WWII. Upon his return home he farmed and worked at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, IA. On November 4, 1953, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Irene Weber at St. Francis Catholic Church - Barclay, rural Dunkerton, IA, where he was a lifelong member. He was also a former member of the Peter Kress American Legion Post #636, in Dunkerton. Mr. Ortner is survived by four daughters, Sharon (Michael) Woodward of Marion, IA, Monica Ortner of Waterloo, IA, Veronica (Michael) Eldridge of Dunkerton, IA, Rose (Norman “Buddy”) Scarborough of Dunkerton, IA; two sons, Leo Ortner of Dunkerton, IA, Jerome (Lynn) Ortner of Waterloo, IA; also, 9 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; one brother, Richard Ortner of Jesup, IA; two sisters, Helen (Ralph) Weber of Raymond, IA, Mary Knebel of Jesup, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; 2 grandsons; 3 sisters, Kathleen Sorenson, Dorothy Youngblut, Delores Kimmel; and one brother, Robert in infancy.
