Independence – Daryl D. Johnson, Sr., died on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at his home in Independence, Iowa. He was born in Buchanan County nearQuasqueton, Iowa, on July 9, 1934, the son of Paul Weiler and Alice Margaret (Peterson) Johnson. He graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1954. On June 28, 1953, he and the former Sandra Alice Hall were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua,Iowa. Mr. Johnson was a gas maintenance worker for Iowa Public Service and MidAmerican Energy for 38 years until retiring in 1995. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church inIndependence. He was formerly a member of the Independence JayCees, the Lions, the Wapsipinicon Golf Club, and the Independence Fire Department (25 yrs.). He was a member of the team that won the Iowa Fireman’s Association Water Fighting Championship in 1968. And he helped with the Cub Scouts. In later years he enjoyed playing golf, woodworking, smoking meat for barbeque, and doing fix-it projects for everyone he knew. But, his family always came first.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of just short of 61 years, Sandy, 3 sons, Daryl D. (Mary Kay) Johnson, Jr., Bob (Tiny) Johnson, and Larry (Kelly) Johnson, all of Independence, Iowa, and 1 daughter, Debbie (Randy) Blin of Independence, 9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 1 sister, Joan Tonn of Dubuque, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, Kevin Johnson, and 2 brothers, Marvin Johnson, and Loyd Johnson.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m.on Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence with Rev. John Hougen officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, June 27th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
