Independence – Gladys M. Corkery, 88 years old, of Independence, IA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, surrounded by family.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. – Friday, May 30, 2014, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, IA, with Fr. Donald Plamondon as Celebrant. Burial will follow at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 29th at the White Funeral Home, Independence, IA, where there will be a 3:00 p.m. Parish Rosary and 7:30 p.m. Vigil Service. Visitation will continue for an hour at the funeral home before the funeral service on Friday. Memorials will be directed to the Cedar Valley Hospice, Camp Courageous of Iowa, and to St. John’s Catholic Church.
Gladys Martha Grover was born January, 13, 1926, in Independence, IA, the eldest child of John Devere “J.D.” Grover and Martha Elizabeth (Basquin) Grover. She grew up in Rowley, IA, where she graduated from Rowley High School with the class of 1943. On June 1, 1943, she was united in marriage to Dwight John Corkery at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Winthrop, IA. Gladys was a farm wife and homemaker. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church; a member of the Buchanan County Genealogical Society and she enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, doing crosswords, playing piano & organ, but mostly caring for and spending time with family.
Mrs. Corkery is survived by eight sons, Steve (Florence) Corkery of Quasqueton, Dan (Mary) Corkery of Rowley, Ric (Debbie) Corkery of Independence, Craig (Vicki) Corkery of Independence, Dave (Brenda) Corkery of Rowley, Dennis (Tami) Corkery of Independence, Gary (Theresa) Corkery of Independence, Rob (Corrine) Corkery of Walker; six daughters, Cathy (Calvin) Struchen of Toddville, Pat (Bill) Offerman of Lamont, Mary (Gary) Gallagher of Fairfax, Linda (Mike) Hayward of Independence, Janette (Andy) Hopkins of Brandon, Shelly (Dave) Tilley of Independence; 42 grandchildren; 51 great grandchildren; two brothers, James ( Colleen) Grover of Rowley and Max (Charlotte) Grover of Rowley; two sisters, Ruby Marks of Rowley and Ruth Hanson of Rowley; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Grover of Cedar Rapids.
In addition to her husband Dwight, who died April 11, 1997, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Johnny; three brothers, Leland in infancy, William, and Guy Grover.
She will be greatly missed. All who knew and loved her will cherish her memory.
