Jesup – Evelyn M. Hertzberg, 98 years old, of rural Jesup, Iowa, died on Saturday, May 3, 2014, at the Buchanan County Health Center Long Term Care in Independence. She was born the daughter of Elmer and Mary Elizabeth (Zigler) Eagan at her parents’ home on Maiden Lane in Iowa City, Iowa, on May 25, 1915. She graduated from high school in Independence, Iowa, with the Class of 1933. On February 16, 1934, she and Willard Winn Hertzberg were married in Galena, Illinois. He preceded her in death in 1982. Mrs. Hertzberg worked in the dietary department at the Mental Health Institute in Independence for over 20 years. She retired in 1989. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jesup, Iowa, and was formerly a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She loved to cook. Sugar cookies and lemon pie were specialties. She enjoyed caring for and watching the farm animals. She was a true farmer’s wife.
Mrs. Hertzberg is survived by her daughter, Sylvia (Jerry) Spykerman of Elgin, Iowa, 1 grandson, Mike Mahoney, 2 great granddaughters, 2 step grandchildren, 4 step great grandchildren, and 6 step great great grandchildren. She is also survived by 2 sisters, Lucille Franck of Independence, Iowa, and Mary (Bob) McCarty of Oelwein, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her step daughter and step son-in-law, Patricia and Albert Calliau.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at the White Funeral Home in Independence with Rev. Kathleen M. Sheets officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.on Monday, May 5th, at the funeral home.
