Independence – Lloyd E. Smith, 82 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Monday, April 21, 2014, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.  He was born October 23, 1931, in Buchanan County, Iowa, the son of Wayne Charles and Sarah Ann (Cady) Smith.  He graduated from high school in Quasqueton, Iowa, with the Class of 1950.  On October 18, 1953, he and the former Miriam Minnie Henderson were married at the Methodist Church in Rowley, Iowa.  Mr. Smith served in the U. S. Army.  For 31 years he worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation in the road maintenance department.  He retired in 1992.  Mr. Smith was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Independence.  He was a quiet person who enjoyed his grandchildren, camping, hunting, fishing, and woodworking.

Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Miriam, 2 daughters, Liola (Pete) Ciesielski of Independence, Iowa, Joyce (Glenn) Shannon of Brandon, Iowa, 1 son, Scott (Carol) Smith of Independence, Iowa, 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, and 1 sister.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Independence with Pastor Scott Meador officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.  Friends may call for visitation from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Apr. 24^th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
