Jesup – Virgil W. Widger, 90 years old of Jesup, IA, died Friday, January 17, 2014, at Manor Care Nursing & Rehab Center in Waterloo, IA. He was born November 21, 1923, at Ottumwa, IA, the son of Lon B. Widger and Jeanette (Coyne) Widger. While serving in the United States Armed Forces he received two purple hearts and was at the Battle of the Bulge. On September 12, 1945, He was united in marriage to Nadine Jeanne Hoeg in Ottumwa. She preceded him in death in 1988.
Virgil farmed south of Jesup for many years until retirement. He was a former member of the Isaac Walton League and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Widger is survived by three daughters, Rita (Jerry) Shatzer of Waterloo, Linda Kresser of Bettendorf, Rhonda (Robert) Schum of Waukesha, WI; a daughter in law, Karen Widger of Waterloo; 7 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; one brother, James Widger and one sister, Donna Haines both of Ottumwa. In addition to his wife, Jean; his parents, one son, Lonnie; one grandson, James Rossow; one brother, Hershel Widger and many good friends preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. - Saturday, January 25, 2014, at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, with burial at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Military rites will be conducted by Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 of Jesup, IA. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 24th at the funeral home.
