Raymond – Richard Raymond Hazel, 80 years old of Raymond, IA, died Friday, December 6, 2013, at NorthCrest Specialty Care in Waterloo.  He was born September 3, 1933, at Dunkerton, IA, the son of Joe Albert Hazel and Isabelle (Kerkove) Hazel.  After graduation from Dunkerton High School in 1950, he served two years (1953 – 1955) in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict.  On September 22, 1962, he was united in marriage to Carol Jean Fisher at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo.  They have made their home in Raymond for many years.  Richard worked 32 years at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo as a meat packer and then 10 years at Pries Enterprises in Independence as office manager and bookkeeper.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Raymond.  He served three years on the St. Joseph School Board and had volunteered at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.  Richard was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed many sports, including bowling, tennis, and most of all baseball.  He was a little league coach for many years and especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play.  Chicago Cubs Baseball is a tradition which will be carried on by his family.  He and Carol also enjoyed traveling to many National Parks and have personally visited all the states except Hawaii.

Mr. Hazel is survived by his wife, Carol of Raymond, IA; three daughters, Laurie Hazel of Cedar Falls, IA, Susan Weldon of Raymond, IA, Rebecca (Jeremy) Rogers of Des Moines, IA; five sons, Jeffrey (Tonya) Hazel of Polk City, IA, Joseph (Jennifer) Hazel of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Richard (Michelle) Hazel of Loveland, CO, Robert (Nicole) Hazel of Des Moines, IA, Michael (Sara) Hazel of Des Moines, IA; 13 grandchildren; two brothers, George (Phyllis) Hazel of Ft. Dodge, IA, Tim (Iris) Hazel of Ft. Dodge, IA; and one sister, Jeanne (Frank) Alexander of Waterloo, IA.  His parents; an infant daughter, Angela; and an infant sister, Rosaire, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. – Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Raymond, IA with Fr. Henry P Huber as celebrant.  Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Raymond, IA, with military rites conducted Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post 714 of Gilbertville, IA.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday, December 9th at White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA where there will be a parish rosary at 4:00 p.m. and Vigil service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials will be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church, The Bosco System and the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
