White Funeral Home Raymond – Shirley A. Schaefer, 75 years old of Raymond, IA, died Friday, November 15, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, IA. She was born October 4, 1938, in Winneshiek County, IA, at Plymouth Rock, the daughter of Orlando Solem and Dolores (Uhlenhake) Solem. She attended school in Waterloo and graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School. On February 15, 1958, she was united in marriage to Franklin Leo “Pete” Schaefer at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cedar Falls. Shirley was employed by Farmers State Bank in Waterloo as Branch Manager of the Raymond Office. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Raymond, Catholic Daughters of the Americas in Jesup and Catholic Order of Foresters in Gilbertville; and also a member of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. Mrs. Schaefer is survived by one son, Craig (Mary Kay) Schaefer of Waterloo, IA; three daughters, Anne (Scott) Sergeant of Waterloo, IA, Connie (Scott) Smith of Jesup, IA, Carolyn “Kari” (Mike) Lahey of Sherrill, IA; 11 grandchildren, Brooke (Richard) Prestegard, Bricelyn, MN, Jared Sergeant of Sioux Falls, SD, Byron Sergeant of Waterloo, IA, Danielle (Dustin) Thorson of Jesup, IA, Joshua Smith of Fairbanks, AK, Emily Schaefer, Abby Schaefer and Elizabeth Schaefer of Waterloo, IA, Blake (Melissa) Schmit of Gilbertville, IA, Megan Schmit of Sherrill, IA, Melissa Schmit of Waterloo, IA; 9 great grandchildren, Hayden Prestegard, Hudson Prestegard, Grace Thompson, Camille Thorson, Maddox Thorson, Spring Smith, Ian Schmit, Alexis Schmit and Phillip Schmit; her mother, Dolores Simmons of Cedar Falls; one sister, Janice Spears Pflugmacker and husband Gus Pflugmacker of Springfield, IL; one brother, Larry Simmons of Onalaska, TX. Preceded in death by her father, Orlando Solem; step-father, John Simmons; husband, Franklin “Pete” Schaefer; one infant son, Mark Joseph Schaefer; and brother-in-law, Gary Spears. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. – Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, IA. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Gilbertville. Public visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 19,, 2013, at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, where there will be a Rosary at 4:00 p.m. by Catholic Daughter’s of the Americas and the Catholic Order of Foresters; and a Vigil Service at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Wednesday at the church. Memorials will be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Raymond, and to the Bosco System in Gilbertville. |
