Independence – Glen W. Lorenz, 89 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at his home.  He was born on March 12, 1924, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of John Carl and Clara Charlotte (Bischel) Lorenz, Jr.  He graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1942 and then attended the Independence Junior College.  In 1943, he joined the U.S. Army and after basic training, he attended North Georgia College for training in Special Services.  He was transferred to the 10^th Armored Division and assigned to the European Theater of Operations in World War Two.  He was with the Third Army (General Patton’s Army) during the Battle of the Bulge and other Campaigns in Europe until the end of the War.

After his discharge, he and the former Darlene Maude Van Dyke were married at the First Baptist Church in Independence on December 1, 1946.  Glen became the assistant manager of Tegen’s Variety Store in Independence and the following year, he and his wife moved to West Union where he managed a Tegen store.  In 1951, they returned to Independence and Glen managed the Nichols Chrysler/Plymouth Garage for 10 years.  Following that, he was a State Farm Agent and then purchased an independent insurance adjusting firm in Waterloo.  In 1983, he was appointed Buchanan County Magistrate Judge and served for 13 years before retiring.

Glen was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Sheehan-Tidball American Legion Post #30, the Bechter-Boies V.F.W. Post #2440, and the Disabled American Veterans.  He was a past President for the Independence JC’s, and he was a Moderator of the Church where he also held many other offices on the boards.

Glen is survived by his wife of 66 years, Darlene, his son, Steven (Janine) Lorenz of Independence, Iowa, his grandchildren, Megan (Tyler) Rasmussen of Independence, and Kyle (Ashley) Lorenz of Clarksville, Iowa, and his great grandchildren, Tanner Lorenz and Kendall Rasmussen.  He is also survived by a special niece, Diana (Richard) King of Olympia, Washington, their daughter, Tara (Mike) Piper of Olympia, and their family, 1 sister, Pauline Barron of Los Angeles, California, 1 sister-in-law, Maxine Lorenz of Oelwein, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, John Lorenz, Jr., Paul Lorenz, Clair Lorenz, and Wilmer Lorenz, and 1 sister, Dorathea Oliver.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in Independence with Dr. David A. Larson officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.  Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15^th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence where a Military Service begins at 7:30 p.m.
