White Funeral Home Independence – Dorothy Mae Malek, 93 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at the Buchanan County Health Center LTC in Independence. She was born on August 8, 1920, in Green Mountain, Iowa, the daughter of William and Edna Sea (Attkisson) Rowden. She graduated from high school in Gladbrook, Iowa, with the Class of 1937. On December 13, 1938, she and Bohumil “Bob” Charles Malek were married at the United Brethren Church in Gladbrook. He preceded her in death in 2001. Mrs. Malek was a partner in the ownership and operation of the Malek Theatre in Independence. She was also the bookkeeper for Midwest Wood Products in Independence. Mrs. Malek was an active member for the First Presbyterian Church in Independence and she was a member of Chapter BD P.E.O. for over 55 years. In the past, she was also a member of Ladies Musical, the Peoples Hospital Auxiliary, and Beta Sigma Phi. She enjoyed drying and arranging flowers that she had grown and oil painting. Mrs. Malek is survived by one son, Bryce (Liz Sage) Malek of North Hollywood, California, 2 grandsons, John (Heather Johnson) Malek of Independence, Iowa, and Ben Malek of Cedar Falls, Iowa, 1 great granddaughter, Braylee Mae Malek, and 1 daughter-in-law, Melody Malek of Independence. She is also survived by 1 brother, David (Eleanor) Rowden of Marshalltown, Iowa, and 1 sister, Dana Ainsworth of Waverly, Iowa. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 1 son, Robert Malek, and 1 brother, Ray Rowden. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence with Rev. John Hougen officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence where a P.E.O. Service begins at 4 p.m. A Memorial Fund has been established |
