White Funeral Home Independence – Gordon M. Colton, 78 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Saturday, July 13, 2013, at his home. He was born on December 7, 1934, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Virgil Sylvester and Pearl Marie (Schlumbohm) Colton. He graduated from high school in Independence, Iowa. On June 20, 1964, he and the former Monette Lee Straw were married at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. Mr. Colton was a lineman for Independence Light and Power in Independence for 32 years. He retired in 1996. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Mr. Colton enjoyed spending time woodworking, fishing, and working in his garden. Mr. Colton liked to build furniture for family and friends. He also was a good repairman. Mr. Colton is survived by his wife, Monette, 1 daughter, Yolanda Jellings of Independence, Iowa, and 1 son Jeffrey (Heidi) Colton of Washington, Illinois. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Heather, Nicholas, Ashton, Clayton, Lauren, and Landon, and 2 sisters, Geraldine Pizzato of Arizona, and Elaine (Ralph) Matteson of Big Spring, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Sylvan Colton, and 1 sister, Gloria Bantz. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, at the White Funeral Home in Independence. |
