White Funeral Home Independence – Bonnie M. O’Brien, 84 years old, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Independence, Iowa, died on Friday, April 19, 2013, at her home. She was born on November 30, 1928, in Oelwein, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Maude Olive (Munsinger) Hanna. She graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1946. On February 22, 1948, she and Harvey Edward O’Brien were married at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Independence. He preceded her in death in 2006. Mrs. O’Brien was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, the Independence Garden Club, and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Her faith was very important to her and she was an active member of her church for over 50 years. Her family was also important to her and she was known as a good listener. She volunteered with any organization that needed help. Her skills as a seamstress were used when she helped make quilts. Mrs. O’Brien also enjoyed traveling the country with family members, gardening, and decorating. Mrs. O’Brien is survived by 1 daughter, Susie (Terry) Brown of Dubuque, Iowa, 1 son, David (Kelly) O’Brien of Chino Valley, Arizona, 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 1 sister, Margaret VanEtten of Bend, Oregon. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 1 son, Ronnie O’Brien, 1 daughter, Judi O’Brien, 2 brothers, William Hanna and James Hanna, and 3 sisters, Patricia Scott, Harriet Todd, and Mary Helen Meyer. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence with Rev. John Hougen officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, April 22nd, at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
