Waterloo –  Bernice K. Heinick, 86 years old of St. Petersburg, FL, and formerly of Waterloo and Jesup, IA, died Friday, February 15, 2013, at Sun Coast Hospice at Woodside, in Pinellas Park, FL.  She was born March 24, 1926, in Buchanan County, IA, at Jesup, the daughter of Joseph Schuler and Josephine (Amfahr) Schuler.  She attended school in Jesup and graduated from high school with the class of 1944.  Following graduation she began working at Rath Packing in Waterloo.  On August 1, 1959, she was united in marriage to John Charles Heinick at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup.  They made their home in Jesup for five years before moving to Waterloo.  In later years they wintered in Florida until moving there permanently in 1988.  Bernice worked many years for the City Clerk’s Office for the City of Waterloo.  She retired  January 2, 1987.  She was a former member of St. Athanasius Church in Jesup where she played the organ and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of Americas.  She was a member of St. John Vianney Church in St. Pete Beach, FL.

Bernice has spent the last four years at Arbor Oaks assisted living in St. Petersburg, Fl.  It was a wonderful facility where she was kept very comfortable, where she met many friends, and enjoyed daily bingo.  For Ken and Nancy Schuler, her nephew and niece, it is a pleasure to have many memories of spending time with her the past nine years as they also wintered in Florida.

Mrs. Heinick is survived by a daughter, Vicki (Bruce) Thuesen of Jesup, IA; four grandchildren; two great grandsons and nieces and nephews, including Kenneth and Nancy Schuler of Waterloo, IA.  She is preceded in death by her husband, John in 2006, one granddaughter, Kari Thuesen; two brothers, Earl Schuler and LeRoy Schuler; one sister, Anna M. Dutton; and her parents.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. – Saturday, February 23, 2013, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, IA, with Fr. Henry P. Huber officiating.  Music will be by Monica Bengston and the St. Athanasius Choir.  Honorary Casket Bearer will be Mike Thuesen.  Casket Bearers will be Bruce Thuesen, Dave Thuesen, Meleah Thuesen, Jase Thein, David Dudley and Mark Swenson.  Burial will be at St. Athanasius Catholic Cemetery, Jesup, IA.  The family will greet friends for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials will be directed to St. Athanasius Church in Jesup and to the Sun Coast Hospice in Florida.
