White Funeral Home Jesup – Ernest A. Schmit, 69 years old of Jesup, IA, died Monday, January 7, 2013, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, IA, of pancreatic cancer. He was born October 9, 1943, in Waterloo, the son of Lawrence Jacob Schmit and Mildred (Schares) Schmit. He graduated from Don Bosco High School, Gilbertville, IA, with the class of 1962. On January 16, 1967, he was united in marriage to Janie Elizabeth Delagardelle at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville. He served in the US Marines reserves from 1964 – 1970. He was employed by Deere & Co. in Waterloo, working in the Maintenance Dept., and he also farmed in the Jesup area. He was a member of UAW Local 838 in Waterloo; Nugent – Demuth American Legion Post #714 in Gilbertville; and St. Athanasius Catholic Church in Jesup. Mr. Schmit is survived by his wife, Janie of Jesup; three daughters, Renae (Duane) Fenske of Fairbank, IA, Brenda (Joel) Schares of Washburn, IA, Leah (Joseph) Reiter of Waterloo; one son, Eric A. (Shelly) Schmit of Cedar Rapids, IA; 11 grandchildren, Trevor McMahon, Jaden Fenske, Maddelyn Fenske, Roman Schmit, Sophia Schmit, Elena Schmit, Riley Schares, Cade Schares, Reese Schares, Scarlett Reiter, and Louis Reiter; also, seven brothers, LeRoy (Joan) Schmit, Cleo (Evelyn) Schmit, Neil (Patti) Schmit, Earl (Cindy) Schmit, Duane (Annette) Schmit, Alfred (Lisa) Schmit, Clyde (Brenda) Schmit all of Jesup; three sisters, Darlene (John “Jack”) Weber of Raymond, Audrey (Brad) Huff and Mary Ann Schmit of Marion, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. – Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, IA, with Fr. Scott Boone as celebrant. Music will be by Laurie Thome, organist Todd Rohlfsen soloist and the St. Athanasius Choir. Casket Bearers will be his godchildren; Brent Schmit, Gary Weber, Jared Schmit, Matt Delagardelle, Bryce Watson and Michelle Lawless. Burial will be at St. Athanasius Catholic Cemetery, Jesup with Military Rites conducted by Nugent- Demuth American Legion Post #714 of Gilbertville. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 8th at the White Funeral Home, Jesup where there will be Rosary at 1:30 p.m. and Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Wednesday at the church. Memorials will be directed to St. Athanasius Church & School, the Bosco System, Jesup Public Library, Link-Cedar Valley Hospice and to pancreatic cancer research. |
