Jesup – John W. Miller, 82 years old of Jesup, IA, died in hospice care at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, IA, on Monday, May 21, 2012.  He was born November 10, 1929, south of Winthrop in Buchanan County, IA, the son of Henry Miller and Stella (Williams) Miller Short.  John attended Winthrop schools before entering the US Navy.  During his military tenure from 1950 – 1954, he served on the USS Karen where he was a metal smith.  On June 15, 1956, he was united in marriage to Diane S. Miller at the Union Church in Quasqueton, IA.  John worked 17 years as a barber and then became custodian at Jesup Community Schools until retirement.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a past elder; Pump-Scheer American Legion Post #342; Siloam Lodge #222 AF & AM and past Master all in Jesup, IA, and a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Independence.  He was one of those instrumental in the founding of the Jesup Golf Club, and a member of the Buchanan County Conservation Board.  John enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, watching the grandchildren in sporting activities, polishing rocks, and woodworking.

John is survived by his wife, Diane of Jesup; three sons, Steve (Marcie) Miller of Waterloo, Greg Miller and Bruce Miller both of Jesup; one daughter, Cindy (Jeff) Youngblut of Jesup; 8 grandchildren, Kyle Miller, Brent (Emily) Miller, Mackenzie Miller, Hunter Miller, Mandee Miller, Emily Miller, Ryan Youngblut and Kelly Youngblut; also his twin sister, Joan (Vic) Althaus of Arbuckle, CA.  His parents and three sisters, Norma Cahill, Marjorie Hoffman and Leona Griswold preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. – Thursday, May 24, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church, Jesup, IA with Rev. Jerry Thordsen officiating.  Burial will be at Cedar Crest Cemetery, Jesup, IA, with Military Rites conducted by Pump-Scheer American Legion Post #342 of Jesup.  Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA where there will be a Masonic Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m.  Visitation will continue for an hour before services Thursday at the church. 

Memorials will be directed to the Jesup High School Booster Club.
