Independence – Norman Scott Frye, 92 years old, of Waterloo, Iowa, formerly of Independence, Iowa, died on Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Friendship Village in Waterloo.  He was born on October 27, 1919, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Norman Scott and Fannie Ruby (Rathbun) Frye, Sr.  He graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1937.  He then attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.  On July 20, 1946, he and the former Effie Mae Mettlin were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.  They farmed in Buchanan County until retiring in 1984.  They moved into Independence in 1981 and then, to Waterloo in 2002.  Mr. Frye was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, the Buffalo Creek Golf Club in Winthrop, and for over 50 years, he was a member of the Independence Masonic Lodge #87 A.F. and A.M.  During his retirement, he became interested in stained glass art while they wintered in Arizona.

Through the years, Mr. Frye served on several boards concerned with the advancement of farming.  These included the Buchanan County Extension Council, Iowa’s Experimental Farms, the Northeast Iowa Farm Business Administration (former Chairman), and the Buchanan County Farm Bureau.  He was also a Soil Conservation Commissioner (former Chairman).  He was the chairman of the committee that reorganized the area public school districts in the 1950’s and he was also a 4-H leader.  Mr. Frye was on of the first in the area to adopt the practice of contour farming and received the Buchanan County Soil Conservation District Award for Meritorious Achievement.

Mr. Frye is survived by his wife of 65 years, Effie, 1 daughter, Jianna (Gary Petersen) Norman of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, 1 son, Dean (Lanette) Frye of Independence, Iowa, 2 grandchildren, and 5 great granddaughters.  He is also survived by 2 sisters, Beatrice Crain of Roseburg, Oregon, and Ardis Rogers of Percival, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence with Rev. John Hougen officiating.  Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Hazleton, Iowa.  Friends may call for visitation after 5 p.m. on Monday, April 30th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence where a Masonic Service begins at 7 p.m.  In lieu of flowers a Memorial Fund has been established for Friendship Village and Cedar Valley Hospice.
