INDEPENDENCE – Jean A. Main, 85 years old, of Independence, IA, died peacefully of natural causes early, Monday morning, July 22, 2024, at Lexington Estate in Independence, IA.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. – Friday, July 26, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, with lunch to follow. Burial will be in the Wilson Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 25th at the White Funeral Home, Independence, and for an hour before services, Friday, at the church.

Jean Ann Knoll was born September 12, 1938, in Independence, IA, the daughter of Paul Isaac Knoll, Sr. and Jennie Margaret (Wignall) Knoll. She graduated high school in Independence with the class of 1957. On May 4, 1958, she was united in marriage to Walter Edward Main at the First Presbyterian Church, Independence. She worked as a telephone operator for a short time, before she decided to stay home with her young and growing family to help on the farm alongside her husband.

Jean had a warm and pleasant demeanor and genuinely cared for the wellbeing of others. Throughout her life she enjoyed gardening, baking, and canning food. She liked polka dancing and she enjoyed attending Polka Dances. She was active in the Red Hat Society, Buchanan County Pork Producers, and the First Presbyterian Church. Jean taught Sunday School and volunteered at Vacation Bible School. She took pride in how she presented herself and always looked forward to her “Big Hair Days.” Jean loved her family and never missed a moment to be with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jean is survived by two sons, Timothy (Terri) Main of Waterloo, IA, Douglas (Kathleen) Main of Inverness, IL; two grandchildren, Nicole (Cole) Welter of Raymond, IA, Brett Main of Fitchburg, WI; two great grandchildren, Blake and Beckham Welter; one step-grandson, Trevor (Malea) Dismore of Waverly, IA; and two step-great grandchildren, Keerann and Linley Dismore; also two sisters-in-law, Gerta Knoll of Belvidere, IL and Eleanor Green of Des Moines, IA.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; five brothers, Dale Hyde, Thomas Hyde, John Knoll, Paul Isaac Knoll, Jr., James Knoll; and three sisters, Doris Hyde, Gwendolyn “Billie” Vargason, and Mary Mulligan.

Memorials will be directed to the Independence Parks and Recreation Department.
