Rowley – Leo D. Kress, 93 years old, of rural Rowley, Iowa, died on Monday, March 29, 2021, at his home. He was born on January 9, 1928, in Cono Township of Buchanan County, Iowa, the son of Ralph Albert and Grace Pearl (Hand) Kress. He attended school in Rowley. On December 7, 1946, he and the former Audrey Lillian Buckingham were married at the Four Square Church in Independence, Iowa. The bride’s sister performed the service. Mr. Kress worked several places, but he was mainly a farmer. He grew crops and raised hogs and milked cows for 32 years. He also worked at John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa, was a janitor at East Buchanan School in Winthrop, Iowa, and also was a bus driver at East Buchanan. He was a member of the Union Church in Quasqueton, Iowa. He enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Merry Mixers Square Dance Club. He was a past president of the Merry Mixers. He enjoyed playing cards (usually 500 or Rummy). And he was a woodworker who made home furnishings and toys for his family and friends. His family was always very important to him.
Mr. Kress is survived by his wife of 74 years, Audrey, 3 daughters, Sally Manson of Quasqueton, Gloria (Leon) Bockman of Decorah, Iowa, and Cyndi (Rick) Bergeson of Independence, 1 son, Duane (Lori Cleveland) Kress of Independence, 12 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 1 sister-in-law, Maye Kress of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 grandson, Gordon Bergeson, and 2 brothers, Keith Kress and LeRoy Kress (in infancy).
No services are planned at this time. His cremated remains will be buried at Quasqueton Cemetery in Quasqueton at a later date. White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice at 801 1st Str. E., Independence, Iowa 50644.
