Independence – Janell S. Hines, 100 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Monday, November 30, 2020, at Prairie Hills Assisted Living in Independence. She was born on July 12, 1920, in Cass County, Iowa, the daughter of Cecil Henry and Pearl Ruth (Stephens) Spencer. She graduated from high school in Cumberland, Iowa, with the Class of 1937. She then earned her certificate at beautician school. In March 1940 she married John Franklin Hines in Cumberland. They later divorced. Mrs. Hines was a secretary in several different offices. She was a member of Union Park Baptist Church in Des Moines, Iowa. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, the Women Descendants of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company and other patriotic groups. During her years in high school she played girls basketball and her team went to the state tournament three times.
Mrs. Hines is survived by 1 daughter, Janell (Bradley Minger) Scott of Fayette, Iowa, 1 son, John (Rebecca) Hines, D.O., of Urbandale, Iowa, 1 grandchild, Dr. David (Andrea) Scott of Fayette, and 3 great grandchildren, Kathryn, Amelia, and Daniel Scott.
She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 sisters.
There will be no public services. Mrs. Hines body will be buried in Liberty Center Cemetery in Liberty Center, Iowa. White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements.
