Jesup – Roger J. Williams, 96 years old of Jesup, IA, and a resident of ABCM West Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, IA, died Thursday, April 09, 2020, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.
Due to the Covid – 19 pandemic, family services will be observed at this time with a Public Memorial Service to be scheduled at a future date. Burial will be at Cedar Crest Cemetery, Jesup, IA. Memorials will be directed to the Jesup Fire Department and to the Jesup Ambulance Service, both of which Roger served for many years.
Roger was born October 3, 1923, in De Soto, IA, the son of Irvin Williams and Clara A. (Miller) Williams. He graduated from Jesup High School with the class of 1941. On February 16, 1947, he was united in marriage to Ione Emma Hoppe, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence, IA. They settled in Jesup, where they raised their family. Ione preceded him in death on August 3, 1993. Roger was active in many organizations over the years, including: Jesup City Council and also served as Mayor ProTem; Jesup Lions Club; Jesup Fire Department and also had served as secretary of the Buchanan County Fire Association and the Quad County Fire Association; Pump-Scheer American Legion Post #342; Jesup Ambulance Service; Boy Scouts, serving as Cub Master and also held a Winnebago District position; and for many years he drove a school bus for Jesup Community Schools. He was an electrician and owned and operated Williams Electric in Jesup for many years as well. Roger was a US Army Veteran. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Jesup.
Roger is survived by three sons, Dean (Kathy) Williams of Waverly, IA, Donald (Lorelei) Williams of Cedar Falls, IA, Daryl (Dawn) Williams of Lucas, IA; four daughters, Bonnie (Jim) Gaudet of Peachtree City, GA, Diane (David) Wells, Jackson, MN, Dawna (Don) Smith, Jesup, IA, Denise (Leon) Windschitl of Worthington, MN; 16 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Ione; his parents; one great granddaughter; and 3 sisters, Leola Temeyer, Frances Ramsey and Carol Temeyer, preceded him in death.
