Jesup – Merrel Donald Serfoss, 80 years old of Jesup, IA, died Thursday, October 3, 2019, at MercyOne-Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, IA.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. – Monday, October 7, 2019, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, IA, with burial in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Sunday, October 6, 2019, at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, where there will be a Catholic Order of Foresters  Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and vigil service at 6:00 p.m., Sunday.  Visitation will continue for an hour before services Monday at the church.  Military Rites will be performed by Pump-Scheer American Legion Post #342 of Jesup, IA.  Memorials will be directed to Camp Courageous at Monticello, IA.

Merrel was born June 8, 1939, in Waverly, IA, the son of Fred Serfoss and Meta (Shellhorn) Serfoss.  He graduated from Waverly High School and attended DeVry Institute of Technology in Chicago, IL, for two years and earning an Associate Degree in Applied Science on February 18, 1966.

On October 29, 1962, he was united in marriage to Bonita “Bonnie” Jeanette Becker at Raymond, IA.  Merrel worked as a electrical technician for the Federal Aviation Administration before retirement.  He was a member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church and Pump-Scheer American Legion Post #342, both in Jesup, IA and the Catholic Order of Foresters in Gilbertville, IA. Merrel also served for 21 years on the football chain gang at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

Merrel is survived by one daughter, Kim (Don) Roberts of Jesup, IA; one son, Shawn Serfoss of Marion, IA; 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  His parents; one sister, Delores Hemmingson, one brother, Orvel Serfoss, and his wife Bonnie (February 26, 2018) preceded him in death.
