White Funeral Home Fairbank – Harry Haldeman, 96 years old, of Fairbank, IA, died September 27, 2019, at MercyOne Senior Care, Oelwein, IA, after a long illness. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. – Tuesday, October 1, 2019, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Fairbank, IA, with Pastor Jacob Swenson officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Crest Cemetery, Jesup, IA, with military rites conducted by Fortsch-Duffy American Legion Post 552 of Fairbank. Memorials will be directed the church. Visitation will be 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 30th at White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, where there will be a 6:30 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue for an hour before services, Tuesday, at the church. Harry Haldeman was born May 17, 1923, in Hauto, Pennsylvania, the son of Roger Haldeman and Martha (Morgans) Haldeman. He graduated from Nesquehoning High School with the class of 1940. After graduation he enrolled in the airplane mechanics program at Williamsport Tech School, in Williamsport, PA, graduating with honors and finding employment in Baltimore, Maryland. When the war began, he enlisted in the Air Force, where he remained until the war ended. While on base at Harvard, Nebraska, he met the love of his life, Velda Heth, who was employed with the Naval Communications Post in Hastings, Nebraska. With the end of the war, Velda moved back to Iowa, and Harry joined her when he was discharged. On February 16, 1946 Harry was united in marriage to Velda Darlene Heth, in Fayette, IA. They made their home in Iowa for a year before moving to Pennsylvania. Harry worked for Pennsylvania Light & Power Company, working his way up to the position of Supervisor. After living in Allentown, PA for 20 years, the couple moved to Belvidere, New Jersey, where they stayed for 20 years. Harry retired from the power company in 1983, and in 1986 the couple moved to Jesup, IA, to be close to Velda’s family. Harry enjoyed races, especially the Indy 500. He also loved to travel with Velda. Together they attended 3 Worlds’ Fairs and many major celebrations and events throughout the country. Harry was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and Fortsch-Duffy American Legion Post 552. Harry is survived by his wife of 73 years, Velda Haldeman of Fairbank, IA; many nieces & nephews; and many beloved friends. His parents; and 2 brothers, Robert Haldeman and Theodore Haldeman preceded him in death. White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, is in charge of arrangements. |
