Independence – Elizabeth T. Luebbers, 90 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence. She was born in Brual, a small village in Germany on March 28, 1929, the daughter of Heinrich and Elizabeth (Schmitz) Roskam. She struggled to achieve her education during World War II. When she was 14, she moved out of her home to become a maid and housekeeper for a family who owned a tavern. She came to the United States in 1955 to become a housekeeper for a priest in Philadelphia. She met Nikolaus Johannes Luebbers and on February 23, 1957, they were married in Geneva, Iowa. They moved to rural Independence where they farmed the rest of their lives. Mrs. Luebbers was a dairy farmer until she retired in 1965. Mrs. Luebbers’ practicality was a major trait of her personality. She gardened and quilted. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence. Her practicality extended even to her faith. She would encourage others to believe in God because there was much to gain if you were right, and nothing to lose if there was no God.
Mrs. Luebbers is survived by her daughter Susanne (Michael) Capp of Madison, Wisconsin, her son, Bill Luebbers of Independence, and her sister, Thekla Hanson of Osnabrook, Germany.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. - Friday, June 7, 2019, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence. Rev. David Beckman will be the Celebrant. Her cremated remains will be buried in St. John’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to Cedar Valley Hospice at 801 1st Str. East in Independence.
