He was born on April 17, 1929, in Schley, Iowa, the son of James and Florence (Decker) Shafer. He attended school in Cresco, Iowa. During the Korean Conflict he served in the U.S. Army. In November of 1954, he married the former Marcella Cantellis Landuyt in Waterloo, Iowa. She preceded him in death in 1959. On September 17, 1960, he and the former Jeanice Kay Janssen were married in Preston, Minnesota. Mr. Shafer enjoyed a varied career, but most of the time he was a long haul truck driver and a farm mechanic. He was a member of the Cedar Rock American Legion Post #434. He enjoyed stock car races, western movies, and his time spent on an Honor Flight. Mr. Shafer is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jeanice, 2 daughters, Deborah (Larry) Beeghly of Conrad, Iowa, and Marilyn (Bill) Crow of Winthrop, Iowa, 1 son, John (Terri) Shafer of Vinton, Iowa, 1 daughter-in-law, DeAnn Shafer of Winthrop, Iowa, 8 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, 1 daughter, Jennifer Sue Shafer, 1 son, William L. Shafer, 3 great grandchildren, 2 brothers, 3 sisters, and a son-in-law, Charles Green. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at the White Funeral Home in Independence, Iowa, with Rev. Kevin Jennings officiating. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, May 6th, at the funeral home. |
