Independence – Linda S. Hayward, 61 years old, of Independence, IA, died Sunday, January 27, 2019, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA, due to complications of a stroke.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. - Saturday, February 2, 2019, at St. John Catholic Church, with Fr. David M. Beckman, celebrant. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 3:00 - 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 1st, at White Funeral Home, Independence, IA, where there will be a parish rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue for an hour before services, at the funeral home, Saturday. Memorials will be directed to Linda’s favorite causes, including the church, Camp Courageous and Cedar Valley Hospice.

Melinda “Linda” Susan Corkery was born October 14, 1957, in Independence, IA, the daughter of  Dwight John Corkery and Gladys Martha (Grover) Corkery. Linda graduated high school with the St. John High School class of 1976. On September 12, 1981, she was united in marriage to Michael James Hayward in Rowley, IA. They made their home in Independence where she was a daycare provider for more than 20 years and later cleaned houses. She was a member of the St. John Catholic Church.

Linda had a deep love of family and service to others. She always put others before herself and she loved to put a smile on everyone’s face. She enjoyed trips to the casino and bargain shopping - she had a knack for finding exactly what you needed.

Linda is survived by her husband, Mike Hayward of Independence, IA; her sons, Justin Hayward of the Washington D.C. area, Blake (Jessica) Hayward of Independence, IA, Cameron (Briana) Hayward, of Evansdale, IA; 2 grandchildren, McKenzie Hayward, Logan Hayward; 7 brothers, Dan (Mary) Corkery of Rowley, IA, Ric (Debbie) Corkery of Independence, IA, Craig (Vicki) Corkery of Independence, IA, Dave (Brenda) Corkery of Rowley, IA, Dennis (Tami) Corkery of Independence, IA, Gary (Theresa) Corkery of Independence, IA, Rob (Corrine) Corkery of Walker, IA; 5 sisters, Cathy Struchen of Toddville, IA, Pat (Bill) Offerman of Independence, IA, Mary Gallagher of Fairfax, IA, Janette (Andy) Hopkins of Brandon, IA, Shelly (Dave) Tilley of Independence, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, Johnny Corkery and Steve Corkery; and 2 brothers - in - law, Cal Struchen and Gary Gallagher.
